Caring for Grandchildren

From April 2011, grandparents who look after their grandchildren for more than 20 hours a week, while their parents are at work, will get National Insurance top-ups that count towards their State Pension. This is a long awaited change in the right direction for a vast number of grandparents in the UK. According to recent research by Age Concern England, one in four UK grandparents look after their grandchildren while the parents go out to work, providing millions of hours of free childcare. There are even some grandparents that take on an even greater role and become primary carers for their grandchildren.
