Entertaining your grandchildren - by Grandmother Carole
Having brought up your own children you will know what kinds of things children like to do with adults and now you will probably have the time and patience to spend doing them without one eye on the clock!
Best of all you can talk to them at length. If your grandchildren spend most of their days in nurseries or school they may have very little chance for extended conversation with adults. At home their parents may be too busy a lot of the time to talk to them in any depth. You can though. So take every chance, in the car, on the bus at meal times etc. Treat their often quirky questions about God, global warming, and their favourite football team with consideration and try and have a real conversation that stretches their thinking.
Telling stories
Of course you can read stories but telling them is a whole new experience. Start with old favourites like Goldilocks and Red Riding Hood. Help children to join in and eventually tell you the story. Tell stories about when you and their parents were little. Look at photos albums together and tell stories about the people and places. Help them to make a family tree to see where they come from.
